Notes:
  • One of Griffith Buck’s roses that remained unnamed after his death was planted as a seedling, potted in his garden at his home.  It was in this garden that he and his wife Ruby spent quiet evenings relaxing.  After the events of the 9/11 terrorists’ attacks on the World Trade Center, Ruby like all of us needed a place to collect her thoughts, so she went to the place where she and Buck had spent so much quiet time together.  Ruby noticed the beautiful, fragrant pink seedling that Buck had not named. The name Quietness came to her in honor of this special place. --- As related by Buck’s daughter Mary, to John Riley, Consulting Rosarian, Kansas City Rose Society.

  • Griffith Buck (1915-1991) was a researcher and professor of horticulture at Iowa State University from 1948 to 1985.  While he earned his living as a professor, his real passion was hybridizing roses that would be hardy and disease resistant in the difficult climate of the central US.  During his lifetime he hybridized nearly 90 varieties. He was not a commercial developer, and many of his roses were lost after his retirement at age 70.  However, several have survived due to the work of friends and other rose enthusiasts who appreciated how special they are. --- www.ag.iastate.edu/centers/cad/GriffithBuck, retrieved 12/24/2012
