Notes:
- In 1804, Napoleon’s Empress Josephine created a rose garden at Chateau de Malmaison which consisted of more than 200 varieties. It was a compendium of every rose then known in the Western world. After her death in 1814 the garden fell into ruins. Attempts to restore the garden have met difficulties abating the original roses. Today, instead of Empire-period gallicas, teas and other antique roses, modern hybrids like Queen Elizabeth and American Pillar greet visitors at the garden entrance. --- Brenner & Scanniello, (A Rose by Any Name, page 97).
